Good Morning,
Last night, the 2011 Data Breach Investigations Report was officially released. I’ve attached a copy for your convenience. However, a copy of the report can also be downloaded from the following site:
http://www.verizonbusiness.com/resources/reports/rp_data-breach-investigations-report-2011_en_xg.pdf .
For this year’s DBIR, we collaborated once again with the U.S. SecretService, and welcomed the Dutch National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) to the team. With the combined data set of the Verizon Business Investigative Response team, the USSS, and the NHTCU, the DBIR series now spans 7 years, 1,700+ breaches, and 900+ million compromised records. Here are some highlights of the combined 2010 case load:
-92% of breaches stemmed from external agents, an increase of 22% from the previous year.
-Insider breaches and partner-related breaches continued a steady decline.
-Malware and hacking are utilized in nearly half of all data breaches.
-92% of attacks were not highly difficult.
-96% of breaches were avoidable through simple or intermediate controls.
A tremendous amount of effort went into this year’s report and we hope you enjoy reading it. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or your Investigative Liaison at any time.
Regards,
Eric
